She was very weak and was certain she would die. She could not talk because of the sores in her mouth and throat which were emitting pus. The only way to communicate was by writing. She asked her mother to send for her priest so she could receive her last sacrament and her last prayer. Her mother obliged and the priest was sent for. Miraculously, her health improved after that night.
Now bubbly and jovial, Gillian feels fortunate to be alive and wishes her experience would encourage other people suffering from cancer or affected indirectly by it. She blames ignorance for the high cases of cancer that are being reported in the country.
A group called ‘Cancer Rebels’ was formed by a group of USIU students who knew of Gillian’s condition and were encouraged by her story. Through Facebook and twitter they are sharing information about cancer. Gillian is currently writing a book and also working on a documentary.
