University of Eldoret has been closed indefinitely following student unrest that has led to the destruction of property. According to a circular issued by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Teresa Akenga, students at the Eldoret campus were ordered to vacate the university by 2pm.
“..by virtues of the powers vested in it by Article XIX (i) of the University of Eldoret Statutes, 2013, the University Management Board has met and decided on behalf of Senate to close the University indefinitely and with immediate effect,” reads the internal memo.
According to some students, the memo reached them at 1.40pm giving them 20 mins to pack and leave the campus.
The university has been embroiled in long-running squabbles between employees, students, local politicians and the university administration.
