Garissa University set to re-open

WILLAM-RUTO-GARISSA

The Garissa University College is set to re-open after education stakeholders meet in two weeks time.

Deputy President William Ruto who toured the university on Saturday said Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i will meet with the top education officials and the Moi University Senate to come up with a programme of reopening the institution.

“We will not allow evil to prevail. We will ashame those who attacked and killed innocent students. Garissa University College is part of the infrastructural educational development that is needed in this country. It must be re-opened to enable students concentrate on their studies to achieve their goals in life,” the Deputy President stated while addressing the staff of the university.

He announced that government will finance completion of on-going projects in the university including construction of a police post.

The university was closed indefinitely after it was attacked by Al-Shabaab militants eight months ago killing at least 145 people, mainly students.

The Deputy President lauded leaders in Northern Kenya for forging a common stand in the fight against terrorism, among other criminal activities that had threatened peace in the region.

He said he was impressed that leaders in the region had come to terms to the fact that security matters were collective responsibility where everybody must participate to get rid of criminal elements.

Leaders from the region led by National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale, Governors Nathif Jama (Garissa) and Ali Roba (Mandera) said they will support the government in the fight against insecurity in the region.
