The build-up to the season finale of Game of Thrones has been palpable since the Battle of Winterfell. But now the bitter end is here, and fans may not have prepared themselves for the upsets that were coming there way.
The episode picks up after winter’s first snow has fallen at King’s Landing and the dust has settled after the battle for the Iron Throne. Queen Daenerys lives up to the reputation of the Targaryens; after a fit of rage causes her to avenge the death of the dragons and her friend Missandei. But now that the war against Cersei is won, Dany the Dragon Queen is keen to flex her power across the seven kingdoms and expand her territory as ruler of all the land. But in doing so, she may have just put the final nail in her coffin.
Here are 3 biggest OMG moments of the Game of Thrones season finale:
1. Jon Snow does the unthinkable ‘For The Throne’
The Game of Thrones comes to a bitter end after as Jon Snow killed his queen, Daenerys Targaryen. A number of factors contributed to Snow’s aka Aegon’s drastic actions but the most significant of them all was Dany’s brand of leadership. Foreshadowed in previous episodes, Dany’s character would not make for a great queen, but inspect would bring despair and destruction for all she ruled. Leading by fear and not respect, she would have had the world in an irreparable state.
Based on the scene where Jon Snow took Dany’s life, it was a difficult thing to do and a truly difficult scene to watch. For him, a warrior, and a member of the Knight’s Watch he has killed many before, but this must have been the hardest kill. The painful but necessary death, is a great beginning for House of Stark, as it became clear that Sansa and Arya would never bend the knee to the Dragon Queen. Daenerys’ death brings in a new era of democracy, as Tyrion points out, “from now on rulers will not be born, they will be chosen.”
2.Bran from cripple to a fearless leader, King of the Six Kingdoms
Bran, the young boy who became a cripple after being thrown out of a window, gains more authority in the wake of Queen Dany’s death, than any able-bodied man. The Three-Eyed Raven becomes even more powerful as a committee convenes to decide the fate of the Seven Kingdoms. Bran’s election to the seat of power comes in exchange for Jon Snow’s freedom after being detained by the Unsullied after executing Daenerys. And although he was once hesitant to claim power for himself early on as the all-knowing Three-Eyed Raven, it seems he is now quite comfortable with the power he holds.
Despite his laid-back demeanor, many discount just how much power Bran now controls as the Three-Eyed Raven and Ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. May his reign be a just one.
3. Sansa Stark, Queen in the North
Sansa Stark probably had the best resolution; finally being declared Queen in the North. Young and beautiful, Cersei may have thought that Dany was the one to come and take her crown, but some speculate that it could have been Sansa all along.
No longer a naive, young woman, Sansa is now established and strong earning the respect of those in the North. A fitting end for her, she will lead in solitude as Arya leads the Seven Kingdoms and Snow goes back to the Night’s Watch.
