Freshers to miss on course of choice after KUCCPS tightens rules

firstyears reg

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS) has made it difficult for first-year students to change to their preferred course after admission in new rules announced by the Service.

The Chief Executive of KUCCPS has said, students will only be allowed to change their course on the basis of marginalisation, affirmative action or on medical grounds. Nearly 20,000 students out of the 67,000 have been admitted to pursue degrees and diplomas they did not indicate as first choice.

In the past, students could pursue inter-university transfers and course changes based on the capacity of the host institution and pegged on their grades.

The new rules will also affect students that have been admitted to study Engineering in institutions that have not been accredited by the Engineering Board of Kenya. For students that meet the transfer rule qualification have until next month to submit their transfer forms to KUCCPS.

KUCCPS replaced the Commission for Higher Education which was previously mandated to allocate courses and campuses to first-year students.
