Freshers to endure HELB cash delays until January

firstyears reg

First year students in universities will have to wait until January 2015 to get Higher Education Loans (HELB) from the government. HELB has said that the process of registration and verification of forms is currently ongoing and may take the next 21 days.

“We will communicate to the students when the allocation process will commence. We urge you to be patient as this process goes on,” said HELB.

The first-year students, who joined their respective campuses, had expected to get their loans in November.

The Board further said it was forced to extend its earlier end-of-October deadline to December, following the large number of applicants. The Board has also claimed that the varying opening dates for the universities in the country has resulted to cash flow issues making it hard for it to plan on the disbursements during the year.

This is the second time that such a delay is experienced with the first delay resulting in some unrest in various universities across the country a month ago. Education CS Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi has already ordered the board and the university managements to address the delays.
