Five of the biggest student protests in history

University students have been instrumental in some of the major social and political changes across the world. The student movement has often been the catalyst and the force behind successful revolutions demanding change of government or a policy. As recent as the Arab spring and as far back as the 1960’s opposition to the Vietnam war, University students have played a crucial in bringing far-reaching fundamental changes to closed and dictatorial societies.

Our very own student leaders in the 80’s and early 90’s were part of the group that pushed for the change of section 2A of the previous constitution which paved way for multiparty democracy. We look at the 5 of the biggest student protests and their consequences, which were all peaceful and had legitimate causes.

 

2012 Quebec student protests

Student leaders lead thousands of students opposing proposals by the Canadian Government to hike tuition fees. In what has been called “the largest act of civil disobedience in Canadian history”, student’s protests spread to Montreal where 500,000 people marched in the city demanding the government retracts its proposal. The negotiations between the student union and government officials is on going in what may probably be the longest student protest.
