Alright, Folks- the holiday season is in full swing and we are days away from wrapping up the 2010s and entering the new ‘20s.
Before welcoming in the new year (and a new decade) let’s take a trip down the memory lane and recount the trendiest looks- some very new, some borrowed from the 90s- that we love and remember fondly.
Here’s a roundup of the biggest trends that have really shaped and defined the 2010s.
1. Athleisure
Athleisure (and its close cousin Streetwear) is a nice way to remain comfortable but also super sporty yet stylish. The trend came about in part due to celebrities- Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Rita Ora, Kanye West- who made bike shorts one of the number one trends in streetwear today. And it is much to our benefit because it’s hard to resist the comfort of stretchy leggings, walk-friendly sneakers and cute crop-tops.
2. Jeans
Jeans is the ultimate wardrobe staple that is classic, effortless and maybe the ultimate workhorse in your closet for the day, play and when off-duty. In the 2010s there was a whole new wave to denim. The skinny jeans morphed into the jeggings- leggings that are made to look like tight-but-cosy-fit denim giving you the traditional classic look of jeans while simultaneously providing the soft, comfy stretchy feel of tights- the perfect mix of leggings and jeans. The distressed jean has also been another cool trend that has been embraced by not only women but also men throughout the decade. High waisted jeans, boyfriend jeans and mom jeans were also very popular.
3. 90s Tiny Glasses
They were in all rage in the 2010s and came in a variety of forms, from oval, to round to square. Bella Hadid and the Kardashian/Jenner sisters made the tiny glasses a legit fashion statement and their millions of followers on social media were taking notice. Those who fiercely adored small glasses often rocked them on the bridge of their noses.
4. Chokers and Chunky Chains
Dainty, minimalist jewellery is a hot take and has been dominating our Instagram feeds in the 2010s. The chocker chain trend came back strong in 2015-2016, but the chunky chain has stuck around because they are surprisingly versatile and wearable for a sleek minimalistic look. Score!
5. Fanny Packs
The resurgence of every dad-core/ tourists’ favourite accessory had the ultimate revival this decade and is now cooler than ever. The ‘90s staple has been a functional favourite at concerts, parties and has become a major mainstay in our sartorial rotations. For a modern trendy look you can sling your pack over your chest; like a cross-body bag but more convenient.
Other fashion trends that rocked the 2010s include; boyfriend jackets, feathers, sling bags, backpacks, outfits with logos, the ‘naked’ look made popular by the likes of Kim Kardashian, happy socks, tall socks, ombre hair and lip looks, flower crowns, high low dresses and tops, crop tops and wedge sneakers just to name a few.
