American rapper Lil Nas X is known for his country song ‘Old Town Road’ is riding high on the charts and he has broken Drake’s streaming record.
According to CNN, with more than 143 million streams in the US last week, the hit song has now shattered a streaming record previously held by Grammy Award-winning Canadian rapper Drake for his 2018 hit ‘In My Feelings,’ according to Nielsen Music numbers published by Billboard. (Drake’s record was 116.2 million streams, by comparison.)
Lil Nas X hails from Atlanta and the song is his breakout hit. The elated rapper took to Instagram after the news with the caption. “It’s official! Biggest streaming week everrrrr! What the f**k.”
With a remix that features Billy Ray Cyrus, ‘Old Town Road’ has found an audience with both rap and country music listeners.
This comes a few weeks after the song was pulled down for not being country enough. As reported by The Sauce, the young African-American boy’s talent was not well recognized by Billboard as it was pulled down from the Country Music charts. Despite the well-matched collaboration and a stamp of approval from the Country heavyweight Billy Ray Cyrus, seemingly indicating some may not approve of the emergence of the new genre dubbed country trap.
