Empire recording to continue as actor Jussie Smollett hospitalized after homophobic attack

American actor and singer Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

CNN reported that the police believe that the popular Empire actor known as ‘Jamal Lyon’ was attacked by two people who were “yelling out racial and homophobic slurs and poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim.” It is also reported that one of Smollett’s alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Smollett is said to have taken himself to Northwestern Hospital and is currently in good condition.

Drama series “Empire” recording is set to continue despite the news of the attack, shared a Fox Entertainment statement on Instagram saying that they are outraged and condemned the attack. They added that they will work with the authorities to ensure justice is served.

Smollett has starred on Fox’s “Empire” since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

Many celebrities, fellow actors and fans have come out on social media to wish the 35-year-old actor a quick recovery and condemning the homophobic attack. These include Filmmaker and actor Tyler Perry, Supermodel Naomi Campbell, Tv personality Demetria Lucas, actor Boris Kodjoe, Gospel singer Kirk Franklin, singer Jidenna, Designated survivor actor Malik Yoba, singer K.Michelle, and Blackish actress Tracee Ellie Ross just to mention a few.
