Daystar’s beauty queen sets her eyes on the ultimate crown

It was just the other day that one Miss Hilda Wathithi walked the hallways of the Loreto Limuru High School and was crowned Miss Kotet. But that was just the start for this remarkable young lady. Today, she holds the title of Miss Daystar Athi River and she is not stopping at the campus crown. Hilda, an electronic media student at Daystar Athi River, has set her focus on the Miss Kenya title.

For Hilda, modeling is something she has had a passion for since she was a little kid. But modeling to her, goes way past the outfits, the shoes or even the runway catwalk. For Hilda, she sees it as a way to use talent and passion to make a positive impact in the society.

“If I can be a positive image to people out there and be a voice to young girls then I have achieved my goal,” says Hilda.

During the competition Hilda initiated a water project to help purify the water around the university and mostly the hostels.

Hilda strongly believes the modeling world should do away with the stereotyped slim and tall girls as the image of ideal models especially in Africa.

“Beauty lies within you and you must first believe that you are indeed beautiful for others to believe it regardless of your size or shape. So if your dream is to model then do not brush it off simply because of what society says. Follow your dreams and goals and go for them,” says Hilda.

It was not a bed of roses for Hilda. She has been persistent and focused to get to where she is, though she says she has a long way to go.

Hilda admits modeling has its challenges especially in the face of a competition but this beauty queen has had her eyes set on the prize.

“I believe when God places a dream in your heart, He will give you everything you need to accomplish it,” Hilda says confidently.

With support from her mum and friends she overcame obstacles and braved it all with a smile. Hilda even noted with a laugh that at one point in the competition, she swayed off the runway but she did not cringe. She looked at her mum amidst the audience and smiled and got herself back on the runway.

Not only did Hilda take the crown but she also won the Creative Category. Hilda created and wore a dress made of pegs from head to toe.

“We wanted to show that you can create something good out of ordinary material. This applies to our daily life situations. You really don’t have to think too far to be creative. Just use what you have,” said Hilda who made the dress with her friends.

For the dinner wear Hilda graced the occasion in a beautiful tailor made dress with green lacing at the bottom.

Hilda is not stopping at the Daystar title. She has set her eyes on the Miss University pageant and ultimately Miss Kenya.
