Coronavirus cuts into fashion: Met Gala officially cancelled

As the coronavirus pandemic continues on, the Metropolitan Museum of Art has made the difficult decision to cancel the Met Gala this year.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art had initially sought to reschedule the event to later in the year.

In a statement to Vogue, the Met said fashion’s big night has officially been called off “due to the global health crisis.”

Met President Daniel H. Weiss said in the statement that “the Met has endured much in its 150 years and today continues as a beacon of hope for the future. This museum is also a profound reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the power of art to offer comfort, inspiration, and community. As we endure these challenging and uncertain times, we are encouraged by looking forward to the day when we can once again welcome all to enjoy the Met’s collection and exhibitions.”

The Met Gala typically happens on the first Monday in May. It attracts the biggest names in entertainment and fashion and has one of the biggest, most heavily attended red carpets of the year.

The theme this year was supposed to be “About Time: Fashion and Duration” to complement the museum’s exhibit on the same topic.

The exhibit will still open on October 29th 2020. The Met Museum tentatively plans to reopen in mid-August or a few weeks later. The museum, which marks its 150th anniversary this year, will also have a belated celebration next year when people are hopefully able to gather in large groups safely.

The Coronavirus pandemic has led to the cancellation or postponement of various global events, sporting events and movie premieres to mention the least.
