After the war, the nation put up monuments in honor of the Confederate Generals who led thousands to the Civil War.According to the popular magazine site The Source, ” The Missy Elliott petition comes at a time when Confederate monuments are falling across the country because of their use as rallying cries for far right, white nationalist groups. The recent and now infamous Charlottesville riots originally drew these groups due to the planned removal of a Robert E. Lee statue from Emancipation Park. The riots left three dead, and dozens injured when violence erupted between neo-Nazi groups and counter-protesters.”
It is unconventional for a war general to be replaced by a rapper, however Missy Elliots fans have petitioned that the monumnet be removed and replaced with a statue in her likeness, it seems that it might just happen. The petition that was kicked off by Nathan Coflin is a resident of Elliott’s hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia.
According to CNN, Mr. Coflin told the broadcast network, “who better to encapsulate the culture and spirit of the city enshrined in a new monument than Grammy Award-winning rapper, dancer, and record producer Missy ‘Misdemeanor’ Elliott.” With the necessary signatures collected, totalling over 25,000 people in support of the cause, it seems work on the MIssy Elliot monument may begin soon.
Missy Elliot may be the first female MC with a statue in her honor.
