Cinema Etiquette: Three basic rules to follow

Drinks and corn! Portrait of a cheerful African couple watching a 3D movie enjoying their drinks and popcorn

Any lover of movies can agree that nothing beats the cinema experience when watching that blockbuster, horror, or sci-fi movie.

Watching the perfect treat for a weekday rendezvous by yourself or with friends, a date with that special someone, or a family catch-up session. And with the increased number of cinema halls in Nairobi, we movie lovers are definitely spoilt for choice.

Nowadays, the deals are even better with every cinema wants to stand out from its competitor. This means endless good times in form of slashed prices or a movie combo, where you get the ticket plus a soda and popcorns. Some cinemas also have an incredibly affordable student’s rate!

However, unfortunately, not all movie experiences end up being as magical as we would want them to be. Why? Because we, unfortunately, lack Cinema etiquette. It’s sad to say this but, we have bad movie behavior which sucks!

So how about we run through several basic ones which are key in ensuring that we all get that desired cinema and movie experience.

Quiet! Please

Yes seems like a no-brainer but it isn’t! People who show up in friend groups are notorious noisemakers in the cinema halls. They are always laughing aloud, making comments, and having conversations in between the movie. I mean who does that?
It is wrong and super disrespectful to every other person who just wants to enjoy the darn movie quietly! It is so annoying to have to try and enjoy the movie admits snarky comments and loud laughs.

Seat Number

When booking a movie, you get a seat number. Now depending on the occupancy of the cinema hall, this could turn out to be a free sitting situation which is perfect and mainly happens during an odd hour like lunchtime and over the weekdays.
However, during the peak hours from 5 pm and over the weekends, these seat numbers are adhered to because is obvious everyone intends to show up for the movie. To minimize the distractions during an ongoing movie, please adhere to your said seat number because nothing is more annoying than watching two people fight over a seat.

Clean after yourself

The cinema situation right after lights go on after the movie will give you the true definition of messy. Popcorns littered all around, bottles of soda and other paper wrappings it’s ridiculous. It is outright disrespectful to leave the space in such a mess so be a decent human and clean after yourself.

Some other rules to follow while at the movies include, turning your phone off, punctuality and absolutely no spoilers!

Some incredible must-visits include Sarit, The Junction, Diamond Plaza, and Westgate for a movie experience like no other.

And as you book for your next movie, please remember the cinema halls no no’s and be considerate of other people.
