CID join Strathmore food poisoning probe

strath

Police have joined investigations into an incident where Strathmore University students and staff suffered food poisoning, leaving more than 300 in hospital. Nairobi CID commander Nicholas Kamwende said police will interrogate the institution’s management and suppliers of the food.

“We want to know what caused such mass poisoning,” Kamwende said.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred on Friday during the university’s seniors’ dinner attended mainly by final year students.

The affected were admitted to city hospitals where 21 students and two members of staff are still undergoing treatment. Eleven students were admitted to Nairobi West Hospital, five at Nairobi Hospital, three each at Matter, Aga Khan and one at Maria Immaculate on Lavington. The university has pledged to settle the medical bills.

Another 80 victims of the poisoning were treated and discharged on Tuesday. The University’s Director of Communication Betty Ngala says the food that was served during the fourth year students’ party was provided by an external caterer.

“We have launched investigations to establish the cause of the poisoning. We have liaised with the caterer who was a service provider,” she said.

The university Chancellor John Odhiambo said; The canteen was tending to another event, which is why the students chose to use an external caterer.”

Although the administration did not disclose the name of the supplier, it said samples and patients’ results have been collected and forwarded to the Kenya Medical Research Institute for laboratory investigations.
