Grammy-winning singer Ciara has joined the cast of The Color Purple movie musical.
The upcoming movie, and that stars singer Fantasia Barrino, is adapted from the award-winning broadway musical by the same name based on Alice Cooper’s 1982 novel. The cast of this Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey-produced film will also include Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, Danielle Brooks, Corey Hawkins, Louis Gossett Jr., David Alan Grier, and H.E.R.
Announcing the news to her Twitter followers, the Level Up singer wrote: “Honored to be a part of this beautiful ensemble and historic film, The Color Purple. Truly grateful.”
The The Color Purple Broadway musical ran between 2005-2008 with Barrino playing the lead role. It would later be revived in 2015, this time with British actress Cynthia Erivo taking on the role of Celie. She earned a Tony award for the role.
Filming will reportedly begin this month in Georgia. Directed by Blitz Bazawule, the film is slated for a December 2023 release.
