Career Climb: The Corporate Cheat Sheet For Gen Zs

beautiful young afro american businesswoman sitting in office

Corporate jobs have been glamorized since time immemorial. It is not clear why because like most things, everyone has that one thing that draws them in.

For me, that clean corporate look made me feel amazing and powerful. For others, it’s the money, prestige, and exposure one gets from the corporate space.

No one however quite prepares you for the politics, and stress that come with this territory. No one tells you that you will be stripped naked, figuratively speaking, and pushed to limits you never thought ever existed. That you will be judged, criticized, and reprimanded over and again. That you will be double-crossed and be told it’s your fault. That you are too nice and that doesn’t work here.

This grim reality ought to be discussed more which unfortunately is not the case. In order to make it in this cutthroat world, here is a cheat sheet to help you maneuver.

1. Put it on email.

It is that simple. Never take action on any feedback or task if it has not been articulated on email. Phone conversations do not cut it. You need to cover your back and having the directives sent through email is the only way you do that.

2. Boundaries

This is a tricky one because you will struggle between being authentically yourself and putting up walls to protect your sanity but trust me the latter ought to be your choice all day any day .
One hack that makes this decision easier is keeping in mind that no one is your friend at work so tread with caution. Always! It sounds preposterous yes, but trust me, tread with caution. People can be savages.

3. Timelines

This will get you fired or worse get you a bad rep with your boss as an incompetent team player. Hence, communicating that you need more time is your way out of this. Survey the situation and ask for an extension if need be.

4. Imposter Syndrome

Landing a job in an acclaimed corporate is a dream come true but the reality of working there is another ball game. Ever heard of imposter syndrome? That can catch up to you because of various seemingly benign triggers .A simple meeting, brainstorm, or criticism can get you spiraling into a mini imposter syndrome depression. So to keep this at bay, every day, you need to intentionally show up for yourself. Note your growth, your wins, and clap for yourself.

5. Improve Yourself.

It is as simple as purposely reviewing the projects you have worked on weekly basis. On a lazy Friday, check your sent items and the feedback thereafter. You want to be on the lookout for things you could do better by catching the inconsistencies, the repetition of mistakes, and loopholes. Don’t just show up for work, as usual, every other day. Review and improve always.

6. Cut yourself some slack

The Corporate space is brutal and cutthroat where your sanity is chipped away with every reprimand and criticism. Hence, go easy on yourself. Understand that you are learning then move graciously. Remember with no enemy within no enemy outside can do you any harm. So watch that self-talk.

7. Escalate
Always! Ask for help, guidance, and direction when you get stuck or are unsure of what to do. This is one solid way of ducking trouble. Do not be afraid, you are learning and no one expects you to know it all. No one expects you to know everything so cut yourself some slack and move graciously.

Go forth and be great!
