“Monsters University” – a prequel to Pixar’s 2001 hit “Monsters, Inc” — buried Brad Pitt zombie flick “World War Z” and took the top spot at the US box office, provisional figures showed Sunday.

The animated movie that tells how monster buddies Mike and Sulley became friends and honed their scaring skills took in $82 million, compared to just $3.4 million for the “The Internship” starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson.

Monsters University overtook superman reboot “Man of Steel” which dropped to third, bringing in $41 million after opening in the top slot last weekend with earnings of $116.6-million.

“The Internship” – starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, which was seventh in the US top office box, saw the “Wedding Crashers” co-stars competing with tech wizards after scoring an internship at Google.

“This is the End”, “Now You See Me” and “Fast and Furious 6” were fourth, fifth and sixth top movies this past weekend, according to figures from industry tracker Exhibitor Relations.

Low-budget horror film “The Purge” — which scored a surprisingly strong opening two weeks ago to top the box office — fell to eighth place with $3.4 million.

However, the $3 million Universal feature starring Ethan Hawke and “Game of Thrones” star Lena Headey has now earned a total of $59 million, with a sequel already in the works, according to industry reports.

Summer blockbusters “Star Trek: Into Darkness” and “Iron Man 3” rounded out the top ten, bringing in $3 million and $2.2 million, respectively. “Iron Man 3” has made more than $400 million since its release two months ago.
