The February issue of British Vogue is awash with black girl magic, melanin and Afro feminine energy and it is the best thing you have seen plastered on the front page of a mega publication yet.
For the first time in its history, British Vogue features 9 darkskinned models all from African countries in the publication’s upcoming February cover. The models Adut Aketch, Amar Akway, Anok Yai, Nyagua Ruea, Abeny Nhial, Majesty Amare, Dibaa Mqty, Janet Jumbo and Akon Changkou are from Senegal, Rwanda, South Africa, Sudan, Nigeria and Ethiopia grace the Fashion Now issue.
This Afro-centric issue is themed towards challenged towards reflecting on what the fashion industry looks now, compare to years past; quite a timely move given the fashion industry’s reputation for perpetuating beauty standards through a Eurocentric lens.
““I saw all these incredible models from across Africa who were just so vivacious and smart. These girls are redefining what it is to be a fashion model. You know, fashion tends to follow waves. We’ve had the Brazilian wave. We had the Dutch wave, the Russian wave, the Eastern European wave… And while, in the last decade, the Black model has come to prominence, I love that we are finally giving more space to African beauty,” said British Vogue Editor-in-Chief Edward Enninful.
All the models are draped in haute couture high-end designs like Balenciaga, YSL and Loewe.
