Black Panther star Letitia Wright, who won the BAFTA Rising Star Award, has revealed she nearly gave up acting due to depression.
Letitia Michelle Wright is a 25-year-old Guyanese-born British actress. Beginning her professional career in 2011, she has played roles in several British TV series, including Top Boy, Humans, the Doctor Who episode “Face the Raven” and the Black Mirror episode “Black Museum.”
Her award was the only one voted for by the public, and she was praised after her win by her Black Panther co-stars Andy Serkis and Danai Gurira.
According to a report by the BBC, the actress during her acceptance speech for the BAFTA rising star award said, “I identify myself as a child of God and I can’t get up here without thanking God. A few years ago I saw myself in a deep state of depression and I literally wanted to quit acting. The only thing that pulled me out of it was God, my belief, my faith and my family, and an email from Bafta asking me to become part of the Bafta breakthrough Brits. I was like, let me try again.”
“I want to encourage young people. You don’t have to be young, you can be any age, but I want to encourage you anyone going through a hard time God made you and you’re important, there might be some of you here who might be going through a hard time. I just want to encourage you and God loves you. Just let your light shine,” Letitia continued.
Wright has been vocal about her struggles with depression. In 2018 she told Vanity Fair, “I was in the dark going through so many bad things when the world didn’t know about Shuri and Letitia and whatever is happening now.” Wright took a break from acting until 2015 after she encountered Christianity at a London actors’ Bible study. She explained, “I needed to take a break from acting because I really idolized it. So I came off from it and I went on a journey to discover my relationship with God, and I became a Christian.”
In the Oscar-nominated 2018 Marvel superhero film, Black Panther, Letitia played the role of Shuri, the princess of Wakanda. Shuri is a fictional character in the fictional African kingdom of Wakanda. She is the daughter of T’Chaka and sister of T’Challa, who is the king of Wakanda and the Black Panther, an earned title and rank given to the chief of the nation. She has a genius level intellect alongside her brother T’Challa.
