Gengetone has captured the hearts of many youngsters in the music scene, undoubtedly making it the most highly accepted and listened to genre of music according to music streaming platforms of Apple and Spotify.
As seen in the respective sites, it’s week three of the month of October and Gengetone is ranked as the most dominant genre in Kenya. It’s no lie. Ethic Entertainment broke the cycle a year ago with a simple phrase turned hit track ‘Lamba Lolo’ which within a brief snippet of time, became a hit song with more than three million views.

Coming in third is the Ochungulo Family. The trio gained streaming popularity with over 2000 monthly listeners on both Apple and Spotify owning to their funny political utterances “kaa na mamako” turned into a song which is without a doubt a catchy phrase. The group’s remix of their song “Na Iwake” has also propelled them into huge crowds.
Although Sol Generation together with the new crooner on the block, Nviiri the Storyteller and rapper/singer Nyashinski, do not scale along the Gengetone genre, the trio have also amassed massive steaming numbers this month, owning to Sauti Sol’s ‘Extravagance’, Nviiri’s ‘Pompe Sigara’ and Nyashinski’s ‘Marathon Runner’.
With many new acts coming up under the gengetone genre, the only question is who will be the next big act to make it into the scene under the new genre’s banner? Only time will tell.
