Before the rise of Strathmore Leos’ rise in the national rugby league, University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine was the arguably the top varsity rugby club. Mean Machine has a rich history as the first student club formed in 1977. The club won Kenya cup in the same year, and again two years in a row (1989 and 1990). There free flowing, exciting and fanatical following was characteristic of Eschuma Absolute. Fast forward 20 years later and Machine is a pale shadow of its former glory.
Meanwhile, other varsity-based clubs like USIU and KU’s Blak Blad have been on the rise but most notably, Strathmore University RFC. The Leos are just under 10 years old playing in the Kenya Rugby Football Union but have become a serious contender in all main competitions including finishing runners-up in last season’s Kenya cup. Will Mean Machine bounce back or will the Leos continue to roar?
