American judge’ rules in favor of doctors who performed female genital mutilation procedure on some young women.
American District Judge Bernard Friedman made a ruling that could change the lives of thousands of young women. In a case against doctors who performed the deadly procedure on young Muslim girls, Judge Bernard ruled in favor of the doctors. According to Bossip, “the U.S. law banning female genital mutilation was unconstitutional and dismissed charges against several doctors in Michigan who carried out the procedure on underage girls as part Muslim sect’s religious practice.”
The judge ruled in favor of the doctors and three mothers who tricked their daughters into the procedure due to the fact that female genital mutilation cases have never been tried within the Minnesota court system. U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman concluded that “as despicable as this practice may be,” Congress did not have the authority to pass the 22-year-old federal law that criminalizes female genital mutilation, and that FGM is for the states to regulate. FGM is banned worldwide and has been outlawed in more than 30 countries, though the U.S. statute had never been tested before this case.” Lacking precedent, the judge had no choice but to rule in the doctors’ favor.
Sadly, the young girls who underwent the disgraceful procedure will not receive any reprieve as the Detriot-based doctors continue to operate without any actionable charges against them.
