Alliance High Alumni plan book drive fundraising event

Winston Churchill during World War II declared: “Never was so much owed by so many to so few.” Alliance High School [AHS] has exemplified this statement by relying on the sacrifices of sponsors, parents, and teachers and committed Old Boys (ex-students) to ensure that the school weathers its challenges and retain its position as one of the leading high schools in Kenya since 1926.

Over the past 20 years the AHS has raised Kshs. 450 million that went towards upgrading of the School and increased the school’s capacity from 720 to the current 1,400 students. In addition, a grant of Kshs 48 million was given by the Government of Kenya in 2012 to build a state of the art Academic Resource Center that will comprise of a computer lab, three science laboratories, and a library that can accommodate 1,000 students.

What books do you wish you had read in high school? This statement geared the old boys to do a book drive November, 2013. This community-based initiative is in its 3rd year of operation and is aimed at providing literacy empowerment to young minds. The book drive will equip the Academic Resource Center with educational and life tools to assist the students achieve their full potential. Books are a key component in the holistic development of a student and will aid towards the intellectual, economic, social, spiritual and moral growth of generations of students by drawing from the inspiration of those who have preceded them. Books remain a limited resource yet their impact is enormous and lasting. By supporting AHS we are endeavoring to provide an equal platform for all students from all walks in Kenya.

T.S. Eliot said “It is in fact a part of the function of education to help us escape, not from our own time for we are bound by that but from the intellectual and emotional limitations of our time.” We all have a book we wish we had read in high school. Donate that book to a student and inspire a mind today.
