Established media persona Cess Mutungi has announced that she is leaving the prime drive-time show The Jam on Capital FM.
The Best Mix of Music show host has been a mainstay on the radio station since 2009, making this year a decade since she took over as host of the successful drive-time show. During her decade on air, Cess who is lovingly referred to as ‘Chairlady’ by her listeners gave her goodbyes on air yesterday (28.05.2019); thanking the station and audience for being part of her journey on radio.
Cess aka Chairlady grew in popularity due to her vivacious personality, her unmistakable laugh and her connection on-air and online with her audience, even creating a fan-club dubbed ‘The Branch’. During her 10 year tenure as The Jam host, she has had several co-hosts including ‘Auntie Boss’ actor and Capital FM’s former host Maqbul Mohamed and later the late Grace Makosewe. Mutungi also worked closely with Capital Lifestyle Editor Vinnie O who produced her show between October 2010 to October 2013.
Speaking about Mutungi’s departure Radio Head of Department Michael Waithaka told The Sauce, “Companies restructure to align themselves to different strategies. Nonetheless, Cess has been a brilliant presenter and always gave her best to the show and her listeners.”
Mutungi has had a great run, interviewing some of the world’s best and biggest names in various genres of music including Grammy winners Anthony Hamilton, Reggae sensations Morgan Heritage and Lovers’ Rock kingpin Tarrus Riley. She also connected with continental icon ‘The Father of South African Jazz’ the late Hugh Masekela and jazz maestro Alune Wade. Other notable interviews include her radio interviews with RnB greats including Joe Thomas, Johnny Gill, Keri Hilson, and Neosoul singer Vivian Greene.
With the announcement going public, many listeners poured out their gratitude to Mutungi; thanking their Chairlady for her cherry spirit, and exceptional music selection throughout the years.
