Academy Sidesteps SZA, awarding Alessia Cara Grammy instead

Solána Imani Rowe, known professionally by SZA was overlooked by the Recording Academy in the 60th edition of the Grammys. The “Supermodel” singer, songwriter who was a sure-win for the Grammy for “Best New Artist” did not receive the award at the event held on 28th January 2018.

New-Jersey born and breed, SZA released the album “Cntrl” in 2017 which earned her 5 Grammy nominations. Out of all five nominations, the 27-year-old songbird won none of the famed categories. The category for “Best New Artist” also included Alessia Cara, the category winner as well as Khalid, Lil Uzi Vert, and Julia Michaels.

On the other hand, close friend and collaborator Kendrick Lamar won several awards, scooping up 4 awards out of 7 nominations he had received. Most importantly, he took home the Grammy for the hotly contested category “Album of the Year” where he faced off against Jay- Z and Tyler the Creator.
