9 yr old wins chess championship at KU

A nine year old girl clinched the ladies title during the Kenya Open Chess championships held at Kenyatta University’s Business Centre.

 

Sharanya Iyengar outplayed and outwitted 23 other players in the ladies category to become the youngest player to win in the category. Sharanya won Ksh.15,000 for her win, scoring  8 points out of a possible 9.

 

Uganda’s chess Olympiad representative, Harold Wanyama took the men’s title and a cash prize of Ksh. 30,000 having amassed 8 points.

 

The event, held on 1st-3rd June, served as the first phase of the Olympiad qualifiers for Kenya as the country seeks a team for the 40th World Chess Olympiad to be held in Istanbul, Turkey from 27 August to 10 September 2012.

 

The games were characterized by 9 rounds with three games per day using a time control of one hour for each player. The tournament had two categories; the open category which attracted a total of 97 male participants and the ladies category which attracted 24 participants.

 

The second position in the men’s category was awarded to Kenya’s Peter Gilruth who walked away with ksh.15,000 and had 7.5 points out of the possible 9. He was closely followed by Githinji Hinga and Ben Magana, both with 7 points each and walked away with Ksh.10,000.

 

Kenyans Isabelle Asiema and Gweyani Jumba took second and third positions in the ladies category.

24 men players and 10 ladies will proceed to the next round.
