7 students hurt in JKIA escalator mishap

Seven secondary school students were injured at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Monday afternoon after an escalator malfunctioned.

The incident involved a group of students who were travelling overseas.

“The Kenya Airports Authority wishes to confirm that an escalator incident involving a group of students at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi that happened this afternoon,” the authority said in a statement.

The seven were part of 19 secondary school students were travelling to the UK and US through the airport when an escalator in Terminal 1C (formerly Unit 2) malfunctioned and slightly injured them.

The students were taken to a city hospital for treatment, according to KAA.

“The Kenya Airports Authority wishes the injured students a speedy recovery.”

The Kenya Airports Authority later said doctors had on Monday night cleared six of the students for travel after the escalator incident.

“The seventh student has remained in hospital for medical observation and doctors expect to clear this student for travel tomorrow,” KAA said.

All seven students are now expected to travel on Tuesday.
