A six-year-old YouTuber has purchased a multi-million-pound property.
South Korean social media star Boram and her parents have bought a £6.5m house in Gangnam, one of Seoul’s most affluent areas with earnings from the child’s two channels – a video blog and a series of toy reviews – have more than 30 million subscribers.
Boram’s videos are described as: “making play and a fun kids’ playground video…cute and rewarding memories of everyday life” and make her an estimated monthly income of £2.4m. With 13 million subscribers on YouTube, Boram keeps her audience entertained with new videos, with views reaching up to 334 million for her most popular video.
The five-story building was purchased up by the Boram Company, set up by the girl’s parents, for 9.5 billion won (£6.5m), according to The Maeil Business Newspaper.
According to a report, Boram’s overexposure in the digital space has been a concern to many. Save The Children’s local chapter went to court in 2017, accusing her guardians of “gaining financial profit by putting the children in situations that could put them under mental distress and distributing the footage to the public, with a negative influence on underage viewers who watch the clips”, according to the Korea Herald.
YouTube toy reviews seem to be big business for young YouTubers. Last year, seven-year-old American Ryan Kaji earned around $22m (£17m) through his toy review channel which has more than 20 million subscribers.
