5 ways to maintain kinky, curly hair

While traditionally most Kenyan women prefer to keep their hair treated and straightened, recently, the natural hair movement has swept many women off their feet. Multiple women are embracing their bodacious manes and implementing a detailed routine to nurture their curls.

However, we are not exactly sure whether it is the length of the routine or its detailed steps that push some women to abandon the natural hair journey, it seems that it works well for those who stick to it. If you are finding the natural journey tougher than you expected, here are 5 tips to keep you focused.

1.Don’t be afraid to try out something new

Curly hair is thirsty hair. Unless you feed it with enough water and oils, it will definitely make you back off. From spritz bottled water to shampoos, conditioners, protein treatments, styling pomades, gels, and oils, ensure that none is missing in your collection.

Be careful when selecting products. Each head has its holy grail- all you need is to find yours. Depending on your hair type, experiment with about three to four products to identify your best match. Jamaican castor oil, wild growth hair oil, shea butter, avocado, and coconut oil are the most commonly used curly hair oils.

2.Keep your product collection natural

Kinks and spirals respond best to natural products. This is because they contain an array of nutrients that enrich the hair texture. Furthermore, they are free from parabens and other chemicals that cause excessive dryness.

3.Keep your hair in protective styles

Ensure that you wash your hair at least once in 10 days and tuck it in a protective style. Natural hair requires very little manipulation to reduce breakage and split ends. Avoid tightly braided styles especially if your hair is fragile. If possible, cleanse, moisturize, and braid the hair yourself. Use simple styles such as natural hair twists.

4.Comb your hair when it is wet

This might sound like a simple and not-so-important tip but it reduces pain and breakage. The pain of combing dry tangled curls is real and the breakage that comes with it is even more annoying. Wash your hair before combing or spritz some water to make it wet before combing.

5.Trim frequently

Do not wait until your hair is completely damaged to get a trim. Try to get a trim after every 2 to 3 months from a professional. This allows continuous growth with minimal damage.
