5 important lessons TV series teach us

Have you ever been asked why you are watching a certain TV Series? Why that series intrigues you so much that you stay up all night watching it is beyond any one’s guess. Your answer would likely be, “Megan Good is such a cutie, or the actors are funny,” People tend to be attracted to movies and TV series that are a reflection of who they are or what they aspire to be. Like the way some law students love court drama. So what have we learnt from hundreds of hours we have spent watching series like Scandal and Game of Thrones? Here are a few lessons. You can add your own on the comment section.

1. Lesson on Survival;

Virginia says she likes Burn Notice not just because of the drama and the story line but also the clever survival tactics in the series. The ‘Burned agent’ uses his experience and contacts to use ordinary stuff to handle out his problems. No high-tech gadgets or guns. The ex-agent uses wits and people skills to get out of very dangerous situations and goes the length to help friends and family using the same survival skills.

2. Better grammar

“If you have watched Game of Thrones then you definitely get what I mean when I say the language structure and dialog is magnificent,” says Cedric, a huge fan of GOT. Phrases like “Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you, undoubtedly leaves a mark. With actors like Peter Dinklage who display excellent command of language, I believe watching Game of Thrones adds some quality to your own grammar.

3. We live in a reality;

This lesson is well displayed in The Wire. It displays what poor black Americans are going through, where they live and their daily struggles. But this is a direct relation to what is happening across the world today. Forced by circumstances, the youth have turned to drugs, prostitution and crime and this is brought out very well in The Wire, according to Paul.  Not only do these TV series bring us the reality of life but also make us aware of what people have to go through in order to make ends meet and survive.

4. The Hard Truth of Politics

This lesson is attributed to the key series 24 with Keifer Sutherland as the main actor.  The action-packed series that has been running for eight seasons gives us a glimpse into the inner corridors of power and security operations. Though we know it’s highly exaggerated, there is some truth therein. We learn that powerful people fall too and that power has brokers who are not visible to the public. What we learn: Keep your friends close, your enemies even closer and don’t trust everyone.

5. Don’t give up

If you have watched the Scandal, then you have to recognize Olivia Pope is a strong character. She gets what she wants, when she wants and it doesn’t matter who is against her. Olivia is the type of woman that intimidates men. If you aspire to be like her, all the best in the dating scene.  Ted in ‘How Iyou’re your mother’ is still telling us how she met the mother of his kids, nine episodes down the line. So don’t give up in searching for the ‘one’
