5 effective ways to manage your money in college

One of the most depressing things is being broke while in campus. Not that its better in the outside world, but peer pressure in campus is real. There is a common joke that posits “at the beginning of the semester you eat chicken but towards the end, you eat food meant for chicken!” This juxtaposition is a clear indication of how radical life in campus can change at the beginning and end of a semester. How do we ensure we are not broke throughout the semester? Well, the secret lies in how you manage your finances.

1. Live within your means

Accept the fact that you are a student and start living as one. Do not put yourself in a class you cannot sustain in the long term. This involves eating from the more costly cafeteria instead of the mess and having coffee at the coffee shop instead of preparing your own coffee.Well, inasmuch as the coffee shop attracts lots of prestige, it comes with a hefty price. You can also consider the option of preparing your own meals especially if cooking is allowed in your rooms. This will not only save lots of money but also spare you from the anguish of living up to the standards you clearly can’t maintain.

2. Cut off unnecessary expenditure

Campus is synonymous with excessive drinking and partying. These are habits students develop habitually leading to addiction. These habits are not only detrimental to your health but also have an impact on your pockets. Come to think of it, how much is spend on a packet of cigarette daily and a few bottles of beer? Individually, the costs appear negligible but when you do an accumulative amount, its money that you can use to do something better.

3. Cost sharing

It is not unusual to see many hostels being shared by two to three students. This is a good opportunity to minimize costs like rent and other utilities. However, this can only work when you have a good relationship with your room mates. Sharing sees to it that you spend less while in campus because the financial burden is shared evenly amongst yourselves.

4. Credit packages and offers

Communication is vital in campus. However, it can be very costly especially with the escalating call rates. Therefore, it is prudent to take advantage of offers such as free texts and bonuses when you top up to cushion yourself against overspending. These offers are very common from time to time so all you have to do is be ready to seize them when they pop up.Furthermore, consider other cheaper ways to communicate like whatsapp.

5. Softcopy notes than buying textbooks and photocopying handouts

Manylecturers will give notes in form of handouts and softcopy.Softcopy is easier to access and cheaper as well. This is also true with text books. Instead of buying text books which are costly, you can consider getting the softcopy. This not only saves you the cost, but also offers you the convenience of reading the books from anywhere including at the comfort of your bed.

These habits will go a long way to help you out manage your finances long after you leave campus.
