2018 is unofficially the year of viral choreography.
As Instagram and Twitter become more and more popular by the day, artists and dance challenge lovers alike all over the world can thank social media for the quick spread of these videos. In an age where teenagers are vying for views and likes on their posts, a fun jig to a popular song is the perfect recipe.
Here are 5 dance challenges that went viral in 2018.
1. In My Feelings Challenge
It all started when Canadian rapper Drake’s “Scorpion” album dropped on June 29th, 2018 and social media comedian Shiggy posted an Instagram video dancing to the track, dubbing the dance #DoTheShiggy. Almost instantly, celebrities like Ciara, Lala Anthony, Kevin Hart, and Instagrammers flooded social media with videos copying the dance to the point where hearing the lyrics, “Kiki, do you love me?” became inescapable. Drake even attributed the song’s success to the comedian when the two met a few weeks later and dedicated the end of the tune’s music video to a compilation of his favorite Shiggy reenactments.
2.Malwedhe Challenge
South Africa’s King Monday’s dance anthem “Malwedhe” went viral in November 2018 all over the world. The jam, which shot to popularity when his fans posted their videos on social media simulating fainting when they dance to it is hands down one of the best dance challenges of the year.
3.Level Up Challenge
American singer and dancer Ciara released her 2018 comeback song “Level Up” in July 2018 and with it came the “Level Up” challenge which turned out to be more than just busting a move. She invited fans to show off their best moves, yes but is also challenging them to share three ways in which they want to “Level Up” or better themselves. Fans and celebrities alike including Tennis star Serena Williams, Macklemore, and “Yoga” singer Janelle Monae all shared what and how they plan on “leveling up.”
4.Kupe Challenge
If you are an active social media user then you definitely came across the #Kupechallenge. The dance challenge that has permeated across borders credited was the brainchild of Ghanaian dance instructor, Incredible Zigi. While everyone else is probably enjoying the catchy Kapa beats, on the Kupe song by A-Star in August women in Kenya drooled over four French men seen in a video doing the challenge.
5.Uproar Challenge
American rapper Lil Wayne finally put out his Tha Carter V album in September 2018 and one of the tracks off the album “Uproar” already sparked the internet’s latest dance challenge, the uproar dance challenge.”Uproar” is an up-tempo track that appears to utilize a sample from G. Dep’s 2001 song “Special Delivery,” a.k.a. the Harlem Shake soundtrack.
