4 ways to cope with quarter life crisis

I am sure if you fall between the ages of 20 to 35, like me, you have probably been yearning for fulfillment. Changing jobs hasn’t worked, neither has to get a new spouse, a new home, a new dog or hobby whichever it may be. When you think about how many things you have had to do, to fit into a predetermined assumption of where you should be at a certain age, it only makes you feel more confused.

Recent studies show that our generation, the millennial generation, are more likely than our forefathers to suffer from a quarter-life crisis.

A quarter life crisis is when a person begins to feel doubtful about their current state due to precast notions of society on the transition to adulthood.
Well, if you relate and want a few pointers on how to deal with a quarter life crisis, here are some tips:

1. Stop comparing yourself to others
Everyone has their own race to run. So what if you are not where your college classmates are career-wise? Success is supposed to bring satisfaction, not self-doubt. The more you stop stalking people on their Instagram and Twitter and focus on what you want,  you will always be living someone else’s life. Choose to focus on you to avoid constantly living in disappointment and self-pity.

2. Let go of the pre-conceived norms towards individuality
Ok, so you were told that being a lawyer, a doctor, an engineer is the way to become successful, but ever asked yourself what you really want? I mean for a minute, silence the self-judgment, or thoughts that begin like this… “What would my parents say?” Let go of those preconceived notions and be you! Yes, you may choose a different career path, but you know as long as you are happy so will your parents be eventually when you begin to believe in your dreams. It might not make sense at first, but trust me it will later on.

3. Re-strategize and Rediscover yourself
Now, a quarter life crises does not, by any means, mean that you quit every job when you feel like it! It is only an indication that you might need focus on yourself. Strategizing means going for yoga, reading a book and work on focusing rediscovering yourself. Simply put, get in touch with your inner child, it’s not crazy, it’s necessary. This will allow you to reflect on what excites you then begin to build on your dream step by step. Remember, Rome was not built in a day.

4. Surround yourself with friends and mentors
If there is one thing I have learned, when you are alone is when you are the most vulnerable and prone to negativity. However, when you surround yourself with mentors and friends, it fuels the vision within you. After all, the best people to keep around in these moments of disparity and confusion are those who believe in your dreams as much as you do.

Lastly, in Oprah’s words as you navigate this time in your life “You are responsible for your life, you can’t keep blaming somebody else for your own dysfunction. Life is really about moving on.”
