{"id":367936,"date":"2026-04-02T13:59:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T10:59:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/sports\/?p=367936"},"modified":"2026-04-02T13:59:19","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T10:59:19","slug":"absa-kenya-commits-kes-35-million-towards-revamped-kip-keino-classic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/sports\/2026\/04\/02\/absa-kenya-commits-kes-35-million-towards-revamped-kip-keino-classic\/","title":{"rendered":"Absa Kenya Commits KES 35 million towards revamped Kip Keino Classic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, April 2, 2026 &#8211; Absa Bank Kenya has today renewed its title sponsorship for the Absa Kip Keino Classic Tour with\u00a0a\u00a0KES 35 million investment for the race to be held at the Nyayo National Stadium on April 24, this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time in history, the World Continental Tour Gold event will be staged under floodlights, running from 4 to 9 pm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This evening schedule will deliver a high-energy atmosphere for spectators and create a world-class night-track environment for the athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of its broader commitment to athletics in 2026, Absa has committed KES 60 million to support the national athletics calendar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes a KES 35 million investment in the Absa Kip Keino Classic, of which Kes. 27 million will cover rights fees, and the rest to support event execution, and fan and stakeholder experiences, as well as continued support for media amplification and engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year&#8217;s sponsorship marks Absa\u2019s sixth year as the title partner, bringing its total\u00a0investment\u00a0to KES 196 million over this period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This sustained commitment has ensured that the stories of Kenya\u2019s elite and emerging stars reach a global audience, while successfully positioning brand Kenya as both a sporting and tourism destination on the world stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As is tradition, this year&#8217;s event will bring together top-tier local and international athletes for an exceptional track and field competition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will showcase some of the fastest sprinters, most skilled field athletes, and emerging global talents, all vying for substantial prize money and valuable world ranking points on Kenyan soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Absa Bank Kenya Marketing and Corporate Affairs Director Mwihaki Wachira, reaffirmed the Bank\u2019s long-term commitment to supporting athletics and strengthening Kenya\u2019s sports ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt Absa, our purpose is to empower Africa\u2019s tomorrow, together one story at a time, and we see sport as a powerful platform to do that by supporting talent and strengthening the ecosystems around it. Through long-term partnerships, we are contributing to the growth of athletics in Kenya, while helping to position the country as a global sporting and tourism destination,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wachira added: &#8220;Over the past decade, we have invested close to KES 2 billion in Kenya\u2019s sports ecosystem, and we are proud to continue that journey with the Kip Keino Classic, working\u00a0alongside government\u00a0and Athletics Kenya to deliver another world-class event.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The competition&#8217;s Meet Director Barnabas Korir expressed optimism that this year\u2019s floodlight event will attract huge numbers both locally and more tuning in globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are all set for this year\u2019s Absa Kip Keino Classic Tour event which will for the first time be under the\u00a0flood lights\u00a0commencing with a curtain raising national event at 1.40pm on 24<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0April 2026 at Nyayo Stadium and conclude with the 100m men\u2019s race followed by the closing ceremony from 8pm. In a historic first, the schedule will also feature the introduction of the Under 20 (U20) at the Absa Kip Keino showcase, adding a fresh layer of youthful energy to the meet,\u201d Korir said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: \u201cThis year\u2019s event is free. We therefore expect Kenyans to show up in huge numbers and support our local athletes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the athletes expected to compete at the Absa Kip Keino Classic are the fastest man in Africa Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya, Olympic javelin champion Thomas Rohler, the 2019 World 1500m champion Timothy Cheruiyot, American Olympic athlete Dalilah Muhammad, the 2016 Olympics javelin silver medalist Julius Yego,  Olympic javelin champion Ethan Katzberg, Olympic and World champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya and Ugandan middle distance runner and 2019 World champion Halima Nakaayi, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from the Absa Kip Keino Classic, the bank has supported the Sirikwa World Athletics Gold Cross Country, held every February. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event that showcases the highest standard of cross-country competition in Kenya and reinforces the country\u2019s capacity to host international cross-country competitions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI, Kenya, April 2, 2026 &#8211; Absa Bank Kenya has today renewed its title sponsorship for the Absa Kip Keino Classic Tour with\u00a0a\u00a0KES 35 million investment for the race to be held at the Nyayo National Stadium on April 24, this year.
