{"id":243954,"date":"2020-05-15T23:49:02","date_gmt":"2020-05-15T20:49:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/sports\/?p=243954"},"modified":"2020-05-15T23:50:50","modified_gmt":"2020-05-15T20:50:50","slug":"return-of-serie-a-the-key-questions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/sports\/2020\/05\/15\/return-of-serie-a-the-key-questions\/","title":{"rendered":"Return of Serie A: The key questions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ROME, Italy, May 15 &#8211; Uncertainty swirls as to whether Serie A can really return to action as Italian football bosses hope on June 13 after a two-month coronavirus suspension.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Behind the united front, Italy&#8217;s 20 top-flight clubs have very different interests while Sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora has been blowing hot and cold.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the players may be back in individual training but are themselves divided in the face of a very strict protocol required for group sessions which begin on May 18.<\/p>\n<p>Here AFP sport looks at the key questions over a return to &#8216;Calcio&#8217; in football-mad Italy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the stumbling block?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Lega Serie A announced on Wednesday that June 13 was the date they hoped to resume the championship, with expectations boosted the following day when the influential president of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) Giovanni Malago declared he was &#8220;99 percent&#8221; certain it would restart.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the optimism only lasted a few hours.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_239591\" style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-239591\" class=\"size-full wp-image-239591\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/sports\/files\/2020\/03\/2578119260e67598d4f32a6ba4bd61f870785ce7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/sports\/files\/2020\/03\/2578119260e67598d4f32a6ba4bd61f870785ce7.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/sports\/files\/2020\/03\/2578119260e67598d4f32a6ba4bd61f870785ce7-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-239591\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Argentine forward Paulo Dybala was one of three Juventus players to test positive for coronavirus. \u00a9 <b>AFP\/File \/ Alberto PIZZOLI<\/b><\/p><\/div>\n<p>On Thursday evening, a press release from the League and then another from the professional players&#8217; union (AIC) made it clear that the resumption of collective training, scheduled for Monday, remains very uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>Many clubs consider that the health protocol, painstakingly drawn up by the Italian football federation (FIGC) following recommendations of the government&#8217;s Technical and Scientific Committee, is impossible to enforce.<\/p>\n<p>Two points are proving particularly problematic.<\/p>\n<p>The first concerns the logistical difficulties for clubs to try and organise a two-week group training period from next Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Players would theoretically have to practice together, then eat and sleep at the training centre or a hotel entirely available to the team to avoid any risk of contagion.<\/p>\n<p>Many clubs do not have these facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The second, concerns the government insistence on quarantine for the entire team and staff, in the event of a positive test. But the common front that the world of Italian football had managed to present in difficult discussions with the government seems to have cracked. According to all the sports media, Inter Milan are at the forefront of the &#8220;revolt&#8221;. Others followed, such as AC Milan, Atalanta, Napoli, Fiorentina, Sampdoria and Genoa. In total, more than half of all Serie A clubs would be opposed to the idea of training next Monday without more guarantees.<\/p>\n<p>Some, especially those at the bottom of the table, may have more to gain with a season definitively stopped. Others, like Lazio, are still pushing for a return.
