Tokyo, Japan, Mar 24 \u2013 The 2020 Tokyo Olympics have been postponed to no later than the summer of 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic sweeping the globe, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Tuesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Games were scheduled for July 24-August 9, but after telephone\ndiscussions between IOC president Thomas Bach and Japanese Prime Minister\nShinzo Abe, a joint decision was taken for the first postponement of an\nOlympics in peacetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Japan’s prime minister and the head of the International\nOlympic Committee agreed to postpone the Tokyo 2020 Games by a year in an\nextraordinary move, unprecedented in peacetime, as the world battles the\ncoronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I proposed to postpone for about a year and president\nBach responded with 100 percent agreement,” Shinzo Abe told reporters\nreferring to Thomas Bach, head of the IOC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move would be a devastating blow for the city of Tokyo,\nwhich had won widespread praise for its organisation, with venues finished well\nahead of time and tickets massively oversubscribed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Olympics, which has experienced boycotts, terrorist\nattacks and protests, but has been held every four years since 1948, would be\nthe highest-profile event affected by the virus that has killed thousands and\nclosed sports competitions worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IOC has come under increasing pressure in recent days to\npostpone the Games, scheduled to start on July 24, with 1.7 billion people\nacross the planet in lockdown to prevent the further spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Training has become impossible for many athletes and exposes\nthem to the risk of contracting or spreading the disease. Competitions and\nqualifiers have been scrapped, while international travel is severely limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday, the IOC had initially given itself a deadline of\nfour weeks to come up with a proposal to postpone the Games, a Herculean task\nthat touches on every aspect of Tokyo 2020 planning from venues to security to\nticketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But after Canada and Australia withdrew their teams and the\npowerful US Olympic Committee and World Athletics also joined the chorus\ncalling for a postponement, the writing was on the wall for the July start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tokyo was spending some $12.6 billion to host the Games,\naccording to its latest budget, and experts believe a postponement could cost\nit some $6 billion in the short-term before recouping it when they eventually\ngo ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will also be a bitter blow to sponsors and major\nbroadcasters who rely on the four-yearly extravaganza for critical advertising\nrevenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not the first time Tokyo has seen unscheduled changes\nto the Games — it was due to be the first Asian country to host the Olympics\nin 1940 before pulling out due to international pressure over its war with\nChina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– ‘Stubbornness and arrogance’ –<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IOC came under fire for taking so long to make its\ndecision after other major events such as the European Football Championships\nalready announced postponements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There have been growing calls from athletes and sports federations for a postponement of the Olympics over the coronavirus<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

British cyclist Callum Skinner had strongly criticised IOC\npresident Thomas Bach, accusing him of placing his own interests first. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Bach’s stubbornness and arrogance has spectacularly\nfailed in this instance and he has weakened the Olympic movement,” Skinner\nwrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This isn’t the first time he has put his own motives\nabove the athletes and the movement.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Tokyo 2020 organisers point to the unparalleled\ncomplexity — not to mention cost — of shifting the Games. It is not even\nclear venues will be available and tens of thousands of hotel rooms will need\nto be cancelled and rebooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is mind-bogglingly complex to make a sudden change\nafter seven years of preparation for the biggest sporting event in the\nworld,” Michael Payne, the IOC’s former head of marketing, told AFP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Squeezing in the 16-day Games into what will already be a hugely\ncrowded 2021 calendar is another major headache, with arguably the two biggest\nsports, swimming and athletics, due to hold their world championships that\nsummer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, World Athletics has already said it was prepared to\nshift its world championships, scheduled for August 6-15 next year in Oregon,\nto accommodate a move in the Games.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
