NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 7 \u2013 Gor Mahia head coach Steve Polack\nsays he classifies the Mashemeji Derby <\/em>as the best he has been involved\nin both as a player and a coach, even as he looks to chalk a second win over\ntheir arch rivals AFC Leopards on Sunday at Kasarani.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polack took charge of his first derby last November when K\u2019Ogalo\nannihilated Ingwe <\/em>4-1 and though he wants to pick a second consecutive\nwin, he knows it will not come easy this time round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have been in a few derbies but this rates as one of the\ntop derbies I have played and coached in. Everything goes out of the window when\nyou are playing this game. Statistics and form do not matter and it\u2019s the team\nthat wants it all which wins it,\u201d Polack told Capital Sport.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added; \u201cThe passion that comes with playing this game in\nand out of the pitch is immense .\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gor has domineered over their arch rivals over the last\neight meetings, winning seven and drawing one and have not lost to their rivals\nsince March of 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking forward to Sunday\u2019s game, Polack knows it will not\nbe easy and is wary of the threat posed by a Leopards side that has won four of\ntheir last five games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is always tough when we are playing against anyone but\nplaying against your derby rivals makes it even harder. This is like a Cup\nFinal and we have to throw everything at it. If they give 120pc, we need to\ngive 150pc,\u201d the tactician affirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While AFC have been on a roll, Gor have huffed and puffed\nover their last five games, winning three, drawing and losing one each. Their\nwins also have not come easy as they have been run close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They beat both Zoo Kericho and Western Stima 3-2 with the\nformer coming off a losing position while thrashing Nzoia Sugar 3-0. Their loss\nwas at the hands of Sofapaka, a 3-1 spanking while their draw was against Stima\nin the reverse fixture in Kisumu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But despite the fine margins, Polack is still pleased that\nthey are able to win, though he admits that conceding too many goals has been a\nworry for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf we can win 3-2 or even 5-4, the most important thing is\nthat we have the three points. But definitely as a coach there is a concern\nover the number of goals we have been conceding and most of them have come from\nindividual mistakes,\u201d the coach explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is down to concentration and we have put lots of chats\nin training and talks and we know where we are going wrong and we have been\ntrying to rectify. Hopefully Sunday we can keep a clean sheet,\u201d he states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His hope for a clean sheet will be boosted with the return\nof defender Joash Onyango who had been out for two games on suspension. Polack\nsays the return of the \u2018Berlin wall\u2019 will be a big boost especially in such a\ngame that needs balls and experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJoash is a big player and a huge leader in the team and if\nyou miss players like that it is always a bit tough. He is a rock for the team\nand he brings in a lot more stability in the defending,\u201d Polack notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only absentees in Polack\u2019s side will be defenders\nWellington Ochieng and Philemon Otieno. While Otieno has returned training\nafter almost six months out, Ochieng\u2019s season seems over after picking up a\nknee injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPhilemon is back training well, but I cannot risk bringing\nhim back in the team. We have a friendly game next week and I want us to give\nhim some minutes so he can pick up match fitness and we could decide whether he\ncan be available for the next game,\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs for Wellington, he is not even training so it might be\nthat we might not have him for the rest of the season,\u201d Polack opined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The right back position is one that has been a headache for\nthe tactician especially with the injury of the duo. He tried off with an\nexperiment of playing Bernard Ondiek, one that worked out well for the last\nderby but of late, he has opted to play Geoffrey Ochieng after the arrival of\nMike Apudo in mid-season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coach says he prefers Ochieng despite the fact that he\nis a left footed player playing on the right side of defense as his qualities are\nbetter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
