NYERI, Kenya, March 20 – Sikri boys and girls volleyball teams from Homabay in Nyanza region won the inaugural technical college volleyball tournament organized by Nyeri National Polytechnic in Nyeri.
The two teams beat Mukurweini and Mathenge technical 3-0 in one sided final played at the Institution Grounds as the curtain fell in the16 team tournament.
The boys team beat fast rising Mukurweini Technical Institute three set of 25-14 ,25-19, 28-26 in a thrilling one-sided game watched by volleyball fans who included Nyeri Town MP Duncan Maina.
Speaking while awarding the winners Maina said that such occasions are good in reviving the game of volleyball in Nyeri which is regarded as the cradle of the game.
“As leaders we will work hand in hand with institutions to revive this game, in the eighties Nyeri was regarded as the cradle of this game indeed all prayers in the national team were from this region, we have to go back there,” said Maina.
Maina added that he will set aside money from the CDF to revive the game by setting up youth and community teams and more so youths saying that many can earn a living abroad through this game.
Nyeri Polytechnic chief principal David Mwangi said that the tournament which will be held twice a year, is geared in ensuring that youths have interest in technical training.
“This tournament main aim is to attract youths some in the villages who do not know courses offered by technical institutions, infact we want to get as many teams as possible from villages,” said Mwangi.
