NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 2 – The Kenya Pipeline Volleyball team has been rewarded with a total of Sh1,340,000 for their victory at the National Women’s Volleyball League play-offs that saw them clinch the title for the first time in five years.
The team was awarded Sh1.2mn from the company coffers while a further Sh100,000 was from the chairperson of the board Faith Boinnett and a further Sh40,000 from PS Petroleum Mohamed Liban and Kenya Pipeline Managing Director Joe Sang.
Pipeline quenched a five-year wait for the national title when they beat the highly fancied KCB in the final at the Kasarani Arena.
“We are very proud of the performance of this team and we are happy with the way they have continually represented us with excellency. We will continue supporting you to make sure that this success continues,” said PS Liban.
The same sentiments were echoed by MD Sang, who has now urged the team to go for the African title, one that has missed from their hands since the last conquest in 2005.
“We will be there to support you financially and morally. Even if it means we come to Egypt or wherever the tournament will be held, we will come there. We will come to support you even in training. We want you to now go and conquer Africa,” Sang, who claims to have been a libero during his youth stated.
Pipeline are now preparing for the Africa Club Championship which is set for April at a venue to be revealed later.
The team was hosted for breakfast by their sponsors where they were handed over the monetary rewards.
Meanwhile the team has now been registered as an independent entity and will be handling their own matters, devoid of influence from the parent company.
Paul Njuguna has been named as the chairman, Pamela Odago the treasurer while Hellen Gichuru, who has been the team manager, will now become the Secretary.
“We have found this team on a roll with success and we will work hard to ensure that this continues, by giving the team support whenever they need it,” noted Njuguna.
