NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 8 – Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu will take on his final sojourn as the Kenya Sevens head coach when the team jets out to Jemmel, Tunisia on Thursday for this weekend’s Africa 7s Championship.
The tactician has named a squad of 12 players sifted down from the initial 21 which has been in training for the past two weeks.
The squad largely includes uncapped players who impressed during the just concluded National Sevens Circuit. Homeboyz, champions of the series have produced four of the 12 in Simiyu’s squad while Mwamba who finished second have produced two.
Among the players with prior national team experience who have made it into the travelling team for Jammel include Homeboyz skipper Leonard Mugaisi, his teammates Michael Wanjala and Alvin ‘Buffa’ Otieno.
The other two are Herman Humwa and Cyprian Kuto.
Brian Wahinya who was in the 2017/2018 Shujaa Academy and was part of the squad that won the Victoria Falls 7s earlier this year is included in the final team while Daniel Taabu, Eliakim Kichoi, Derrick Keyoga, Benjamin Marshall and Gramwel Bunyasi will make their maiden appearance for Shujaa.
Kenya is top seeds in the Tournament’s Pools and is joined by Morocco and Botswana. Defending Champions Uganda headline Pool B where they’ll meet Senegal and Ghana. Pool C has Zimbabwe, Hosts Tunisia and Mauritius with Madagascar, Namibia and Zambia in Pool D.
After the Africa 7s, Simiyu will relinquish his role to the new management team led by Homeboyz FC boss Paul Murunga.
