England to interview Southgate for top job

England interim manager Gareth Southgate has declared he has the necessary courage to make contentious decisions

England interim manager Gareth Southgate has declared he has the necessary courage to make contentious decisions

LONDON, United Kingdom, Nov 21- Gareth Southgate will be interviewed for the vacant England manager’s job at St George’s Park on Monday, according to Sky sources.

The interview will be conducted by FA chief executive Martin Glenn, FA chairman Greg Clarke and FA technical director Dan Ashworth, as well as Graeme Le Saux and Howard Wilkinson.

Whilst all five men will be present at the interview, only Glenn, Clarke and Ashworth will make the final decision on any appointment.

Southgate’s four-match stint as interim manager came to an end last Tuesday, with Glenn admitting the 46-year-old was in a “strong position” to secure the role on a permanent basis.

However, Glenn did not rule out interviewing other candidates and Sky sources understand Southgate will only consider accepting a contract that runs until the end of Euro 2020 and puts him on financial parity with both his predecessors and other external contenders.

Southgate, who was placed in interim control following the departure of Sam Allardyce in September, led England two wins and two draws during his four-match spell in charge.

Home wins over Malta and Scotland as well as a draw away in Slovenia has left England top of Group F in their quest to secure qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

England conceded two late goals in Southgate’s final match as interim boss to draw 2-2 in a friendly with Spain, with Real Madrid midfielder Isco scoring a 96th-minute equaliser.
