Maina, Jebet dominate Mombasa Marathon

MOMBASA, Kenya, Sep 25 – Paul Maina from Nyeri County and Nancy Jebet are the winners of the 2016 Safaricom Mombasa International marathon held on Sunday.

Maina dominated the men’s race to win in 2:12:13 followed by Samson Bor who clocked 2:12:50 while Declerk Omari completed the podium in 2:12:79.

Speaking after winning the 42km race, Maina expressed his excitement in winning the race and seeing his efforts pay off.

 “I was well prepared for this race despite the hot weather, I had to push myself to the end and ensure that I clinch the first position. The race was tough but I am in top as I prepare to participate in the upcoming Madoka Marathon.”

The 42Km female category saw Jebet take the lead in 2:40:01, followed by Sheila Chebet in 2:44:09 as Winnie Frida came in third in 2:44:25.

Four-time Safaricom Lewa Marathon winner Fridah Lodepa finished fourth after returning 2:45:19 in the women’s race.

In the 10km race, Nancy Jepkosgei from Iten defended her title in 38:28, followed by Beatrice Rutta (38:52) with Njoki Ndungu coming in third to finish in 39:15.

Joshua Kipkorir emerged the winner of the 10km race to in 32:16, followed by Patrick Mutunga in 32:30 and Stephen Mwenda in 32:48.

The 33rd edition of the race saw over 250 athletes participate in the 42KM, 10KM and 2KM fun race.

Winners of 42KM both men and women took home Kshs 400,000, Kshs, second placed received 150,000 while third finishers were awarded with  Kshs 100,000.
