SuperSport dedicate 7 channels for Olympics

NAIROBI, Kenya, July 26 – Supersport have announced a Sh1m donation towards the Olympic kitty for team Kenya ahead of the Olympic Games scheduled for next month in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  

Speaking on Tuesday, SuperSport General Manager of East Africa, Auka Gecheo, announced that the coverage will be live on their pay television platform with a massive seven channels dedicated towards the view ship of the Games that gets underway August 5-21.

“From a SuperSport and DStv perspective, a lot of this coverage will be live on our platform we have dedicated seven channels available for our premier subscribes and all the way down to our compact subscribes who can then watch each and every event that Kenyan’s are participating in,” said the GM

“ We are offering a comprehensive coverage of the entire event for the duration of the Olympics and we think we are sending a really strong team and Dr Kipchoge Keino (NOC-K chairman) mentioned that we are sending double the number of participants that we sent to the last Olympics,” added Gecheo.

It is the first time Rugby sevens is being showcased at the Olympics as Kenya is able to send both the men’s and women’s teams to compete.

“It means a lot sending both the men’s and women’s rugby 7’s teams to the Olympics and considering the recent performance of the men’s sevens team in the HSBC sevens circuit we actually see them as a medal perspective.”

“Through SuperSport has made significant investments in local sport which are unmatched by any other operator in Africa and today we are happy to support the NOCK with a small token in addition to content we are delivering to East African’s,” Gecheo stated.

The GM also noted that Kenyan’s around have great expectations for those competing on track and field events that has been dominated by the East African nation for years.

“Always great contenders on the track so we have great expectations for the men and women we have sent from the team. You can’t forget people like Julius Yego who is a world champion and we l also see a medals perspective.”

You can’t really be a part of sports in Kenya if you are not involved in the Olympics and athletics and we see this as an opportune moment to stamp our mark as proud supporters of sports in this country.

Seven 24-hour SuperSport channels will be dedicated to Olympics for DStv customers, showcasing all of the sporting events across the channels. These are SS4, SS5, SS6, SS7, SS12, SS13, and SS14.

Supersport 1: Golf, Rugby Sevens (when not clashing with live non-Olympic sport)

SS4: Opening ceremony, swimming, athletics, marathon, walk, closing ceremony.

SS5: Hockey, handball, volleyball (beach and indoors), gymnastics, trampoline.

SS6: Tennis, basketball, four cycling disciplines, table tennis, badminton.

SS7:Boxing, taekwondo, weightlifting wrestling, judo.

SS12: Olympic News Channel

SS 13: Watersport: Rowing, canoeing, sailing, diving water, polo, open, water swimming.

SS14: Archery, shooting, fencing, modern pentathlon, equestrian.

Kenya will be represented in Athletics, Rugby Sevens, Boxing, Archery, Weightlifting and Swimming.
