Mourinho praises Shaw’s attitude

LUKE-SHAW-1UNITED KINGDOM, July 18 – Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has paid tribute to Luke Shaw’s work ethic after the left-back returned to action following 10 months on the sidelines.

Shaw turned out in United’s pre-season clash with Wigan on Saturday, his first appearance since suffering a double fracture of his right leg last September against PSV Eindhoven.

The 21-year-old played what Mourinho described as a “safe 45 minutes” in an effort not to rush his return, and drew praise from his new boss.

“When I found Luke at the training ground, it was a surprise for me because I thought he couldn’t be ready to train without any type of limitation, but he did fantastic in the summer. He sacrificed his holiday,” Mourinho explained.

“He stayed in Manchester and was at the training ground every day, putting himself in condition. Of course, you lose a bit of sharpness of condition and confidence, that is normal, but he is trying hard.”

The former Southampton full-back looked in good condition and not short of fitness on his return, a stark contrast from his first pre-season with the club where he was criticised for appearing to be overweight.

Speaking prior to the 2-0 win over Wigan, Shaw expressed his delight at being back in training.

“It feels really good,” Shaw told the club’s official website. “I don’t know really how to describe it, it was a really tough last eight or nine months until I got out on the training pitch and ever since then I haven’t looked back.

“From now on I’m just going to look forward and carry on doing what I did last year from the start.

“Everyone helped from the club and from outside the club. My family and friends played a massive part in it.

“Obviously I have said it before, but here’s a big ‘thank you’ to the staff here who have looked after me really well and have got me back on the pitch.”
