LONDON, United Kingdom, July 5 – English Premier League sides Chelsea and Spurs saw their fines for the unseemly brawls that peppered their highly-charged London derby last season reduced on appeal by the Football Association (FA) on Tuesday.

The 2-2 draw on May 2 which ended Spurs title hopes and confirmed Leicester City as champions, saw two mass brawls break out as the Spurs players lost control with some over exuberant tackling as their hopes of the crown slipped away.

The nadir of the night’s behaviour was reached in the tunnel when there was another brawl and the Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink was sent flying — Chelsea were initially fined Sh 49m (£375,000) and Spurs Sh29m ( £225,000).

“An appeal board has reduced the fines issued to Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in relation to events at Stamford Bridge on May 2, 2016,” a FA statement read.

“Following the game, both clubs were charged by the FA with failing to control their players and officials.

“An independent regulatory commission ordered that Chelsea be fined £375,000 and Tottenham Hotspur £225,000 after taking into consideration previous similar breaches of FA rules.

“However, following an appeal board hearing the fines have been reduced to Sh38m (£290,000) and Sh23m (£175,000) respectively. It remains that both clubs have been warned as to their future conduct.”
