NAIROBI, Kenya, June 15 –
Gor Mahia midfielder Khalid Aucho is the May Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK)/SportPesa Player of the Month for May.
Aucho, coming from international duty with Uganda Cranes, won the accolade ahead of team-mate defender Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma, Sony Sugar’s Fredrick Onyango and Ulinzi Stars top scorer John Mark Makwata.
Aucho was instrumental to the Kenyan Premier League defending champions in the month of May, where he provided two assists and scored a goal against struggling Sofapaka in their 2-0 win.
“First of all I am surprised because I did not expect it. I thought it would be Marcelo (Eric Ouma). I did not start the month well but the coach helped me to settle down and focus,” Aucho said after receiving the award at the team’s training base Nairobi’s Camp Toyoyo Ground.
“Getting this award I am very happy and hopefully, it will spur me to work harder. I thank my team mates and the coach for the support they have given me,” the midfielder added.
His contribution saw K’Ogalo go unbeaten in that month, collecting all the 12 points available on offer.
Of the seven votes casted by the SJAK Football Commission, Aucho amassed 17 points to beat Ouma and Onyango who both accumulated 15 points apiece.
Makwatta, who won the award last year in April, only managed to get 13 points.
Aucho, who helped Uganda Cranes inch closer to qualifying to the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in over three decades after winning 2-1 in 2017 AFCON qualifier, was awarded Sh 100, 0000, a trophy engraved with his name and a 43-inch smart television from electronics firm LG, while the team got Sh 50,000.
