SOCHI, April 23- Ferrari could introduce an engine upgrade as early as next weekend’s Russian GP after promising results on the dyno.

Although Ferrari have made inroads on Mercedes’ advantage this season, the Scuderia are still some way off the pace of the World Champions.

They are, however, hoping to narrow the deficit further and could do it as early as next weekend at the Sochi circuit.

According to Motorsport.com; Ferrari have been running an upgraded power unit on the dyno which they believe has “unlocked horsepower improvements.”

As such the Scuderia are considering spending three of their nine remaining development tokens on this update.

Should the team go ahead, both Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen could use the improved engine next weekend in Sochi meaning a third power unit for Vettel already this season.

Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne recently revealed that the Italian outfit was planning to introduce an “important” upgrade.

“We have much work ahead of us, and we will bring forward an important development,” he said last weekend in China. “Also, we know that Mercedes will not stop developing, so we have no illusions that they will be easily beaten.”
