NAIROBI, February 25 – Former British and Finland rally champion Tapio Laukannen is seeded first in the season opening Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) that will rev-off in Kajiado Saturday.

Tapio will be navigated by compatriot Pasi Torma in a Subaru GVB13 while second off the ramp is KNRC defending champion Jaspreet Chatthe in a Mitsubishi Lancer EVOX.

Baldev Chager will be flagged off third in an EVOX followed by Ian Duncan and Carl Flash Tundo in a Subaru GC8.

Tundo, who is set to unveil a new car during the Safari Rally on the Easter weekend, has resorted to the GC8.

“I’m back in a GC8 for KNRC round 1 after many years. I’m looking forward to it,” Tundo said.

Local rally driver, Issa Amwari, will be motivated to challenge the big boys after signing a season-long Sh5m deal with Menengai Cream.

Amwari, who is making a comeback to the championship after a year-long sabbatical, will be driving a new Mitsubishi Evo X, which he hopes will give him the much needed performance to battle it out with the greats.

“We are delighted to be associated with Issa Amwari’s team in what we believe to be an ideal sponsorship for our brand. Being active participants in the rally has made our brand synonymous with rally enthusiast and we wish him and his team the best this coming weekend and throughout the circuit,” Menengai Oil Refineries Managing Director, Onkar Rai highlighted.

Amwari said, “This is a fantastic opportunity and I’m humbled by their trust in me as I get back to racing. We have engaged in the past and I’m glad they want to get more involved in my growth. I look forward to a long fruitful partnership.

“As for this weekend’s race, I’m excited to be sharing the stage with rally veterans and I believe this will be the best time to show my new car’s pedigree and Power.”

Former Uganda Champion Jas Mangat will be making a comeback to KNRC after competing in five rounds last year.

He is among the foreign drivers to tackle the first round that has attracted 40 participants.
