NAIROBI, May 6 – A second-half strike by Ali Abondo was enough to see champions Gor Mahia open a seven point lead at the KPL summit following their 1-0 win over Sony Sugar at Awendo’s Green Stadium on Wednesday.
After a goalless first-half Abondo broke the deadlock from a well curved free-kick from the edge of the box in the 57th minute as the champions maintained their unbeaten start to the season nine matches in.
The match that saw head coach Frank Nutall start with Timothy Otieno and Innocent Wafula was stopped for over five minutes after heavy downpour in the first-half flooded the Awendo pitch.
Michael Olunga could have opened the scoring in the 13th minute but failed to tap in Abondo’s corner while on the other end the only chance for Sony came in 12 minutes later when Vincent Ogutu rattled the woodwork.
Gor who arrived in Awendo on the day of the match after a seven hour bus drive entered the match at the back of a 2-0 triumph over Ulinzi Stars.
The goal came moments after Sony and former Gor head coach Zedekiah Otieno introduced Victor Ademba and Meshack Muyonga for Victor Ayugi and Keneddy Oduor in bid to force the result as they hoped to bounce back from last weekend’s 5-1 mauling at AFC Leopards.
Gor piled more pressure upfront with Nuttall withdrawing Rwandan Meddie Kagere and goal scorer Abondo for George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo and Ernest Wendo but neither could double the lead.
Gor travel to Western Stima on Sunday while Sony who suffered their second successive defeat host struggling KCB.
